In regards to the light-hearted jibe I made about bank policy preventing me from having a debit card to my own business account, I have stumbled across yet another frustrating hurdle for us young entrepreneurs. (I say stumbled across but really I mean it just slapped me right in the inbox… ouch!)
So I have designed my own website, learned how to link my own domain name and pretty much organised everything. Then I created a nice shop to link to my website so that people browsing who think, “Hey this is great, I want to be a part of this too!” are able to click on it and have a look at the designs that I created on the t-shirts I had printed and order one! All fine and well. I linked it up and added colours to the shop dashboard and announced it to a couple of family and friends to test out the order process for me. I subsequently discover that my account has been deactivated and in order for me to be allowed to use it, my Dad has to email their support centre with proof of his identification and give me permission to use the site because once again I have to be 18 years old to accept payments.
The closer I get to having a functioning business, the more difficult it is becoming. It is literally less than three weeks until my birthday which means it is just over a month until I start University and I had promised myself that I’d have had Sense Of Self up and running so that I didn’t get any nasty surprises with things not going to plan while I was trying to hold down a part time job and settle into a student flat and begin a new chapter of my life.
On that note, when you order a t-shirt once I am able to release the web-address then if your bill has “Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Ian Thomson” along the bottom, please just laugh.
Thank-you for your continued support!
Hello again everyone!
I apologise for 1) sporadic posting and 2) lack of posting. Things are busy in a really good way right now. Tomorrow the show run starts for Phantom Of The Opera and I will be in the orchestra pit with my violin for the rest of the week (after work of course.)
Also I have ordered 100 t-shirts which are due to be printed any day now. Great stuff.
Everything seems on track for the website and I have 300 wristbands to give away so look out for me over the festival period in Edinburgh…
I will get into a routine soon I promise, then you won’t have to guess whether I have posted something although I’m sure you all read this blog every day just in case!
Power on through ’till Friday 🙂
This photo was taken at the pre-launch party which again, was absolutely awesome. Sense Of Self was given a whole page of the Dunfermline Press yesterday!! A WHOLE PAGE!
I am thrilled that they used a photo which included all of the amazing young people who represent Sense Of Self as ambassadors.
The cheque has also been put into the bank so now begins a new chapter of the journey.
A massive thank-you to all my amazing ambassadors! From left to right starting at the top we have: Stuart Ritchie, Kallum Russell, Andrew Gardiner, Michael Saunders, Hannah Thomson, Deborah Smart, Shannon McGlinchey, (myself in blue), Louise Munro and Kimberley Riddell.
The whole evening on Tuesday was amazing and I am grateful to everyone who could come. Now we play the waiting game and once my official business bank account is open then things will start getting even more exciting!
Three cheers for Sense Of Self!
Today I was designing the t-shirts for my Sense Of Self Ambassadors (which are really awesome by the way!!!) and I was thinking about the fact that it is very nearly pre-launch party time which means it is also very nearly launch time too!
I’m pushing to launch Sense Of Self over the summer so that I can give my full attention to making sure everything runs smoothly and then can focus positively on University when I get there. My goal is to have Sense Of Self developing throughout my time as a student so that when I finish University I have a ready-made job and an ever growing business to support myself and avoid the panic of “I have a degree but there aren’t any jobs” and hopefully be able to offer jobs to others and build a Sense Of Self team.
But yeah today I remembered where the initial inspiration for Sense Of Self came from. It was because I always dreamed of being an art student and going to art school but then the closer I found myself towards the stage of my life where I had to make a decision, I realised that art is my hobby. Drawing is fun for me. I like to paint whatever inspiration throws at me. I do not enjoy being restricted and told what to do because creativity is a freedom and a form of expression and I wanted it to always stay that way for me. I want to feel like an art student without having the pressures of being an art student.
Back to business. My dream for Sense Of Self is that it will give others opportunities to find an idea that excites them and run with it. I want to show the world that you can absolutely live the life you always dreamed of. I want to start as an example of this and watch the world take notice.
Before I get carried away though we have the pre-launch party. Getting close, exciting!
IT’S SHOW TIME
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you all that I am (very ambitiously) hoping to host a kick-off event for Sense Of Self™ at the end of this month. The purpose will be to gather together a group of people who are willing to be ambassadors for Sense Of Self™ and also to celebrate the journey so far and hype up the excitement for the amazing things to come!
I am struggling to believe that it is already almost the middle of May. I keep setting myself deadlines for things then feign surprise when they creep up on me. There are only a handful of deadlines that I absolutely have to stick to no matter what as the rest are able to be pushed a little but I hope to stick to them anyway. My essential dates are May/June for a kick-off event, July (at the latest by the 15th approximately) to officially launch Sense Of Self™ and then I would have an official official launch party sometime in August! That may sound odd but my idea behind that is to have already successfully received and delivered orders so that we are celebrating the launch of a trading business (and so that it will be almost my birthday and I can have champagne…)
Before any of this though, it would be amazing to have more of a presence on Facebook and twitter. Ideally 500 likes/followers would rock so lets try and make that happen? I post really cool things 🙂
Who remembers those books “Chicken Soup for the Soul” that had inspiring stories of kindness and love? They were great. I used to have a lot of them. They really inspired me to do random acts of kindness.
The plan for me now is to get everything in place as I intend to officially launch Sense Of Self in July this year!!!
My goal is to reach 500 followers/likes on my social media pages before then! Can you make that happen for me? (Yes)
I hope to have wristbands made soon and will be handing them out and will definitely encourage selfies of everyone wearing them!
Have a look on Twitter at my various motivational notions and ideas- @SenseOfSelf17
Hope you’re having a great week!
